Compare D&D 5e healing potions

Choose a potion for the HP you are missing, not just its maximum roll. Each card calculates the full healing distribution, expected HP regained and the amount likely to exceed your HP maximum.

Average healing and effective healing differ

A 2d4 + 2 potion averages 7 HP before your HP maximum limits it. If you are missing 5 HP, it restores about 4.94 HP on average: only the lowest roll falls short, and larger rolls cannot fill more than those 5 HP.

Keep the activation cost in view

Read the activation rules for your selected edition before drinking or administering a potion. The 2014 and 2024 entries preserve their own action costs; do not transfer a rule from one edition to the other.

Compare one use at the same missing HP

Use the same missing-HP value across the comparison table. A stronger potion can help more when many HP are missing, while its larger rolls can be wasted on a small injury. Additional healing bonuses and restrictions are outside this model.
